Summary on Grant Application Form
In this proposal, we seek financial support for developing methodologies for minimal structure regulatory controllers. These controllers have the advantage that their structure can be significantly simpler than that of a full (centralised) controller without the significant loss in performance that is normally expected from a diagonal (fully decentralised) controller. This proposal necessitates the development and implementation of novel control structure design methodologies that are of a different nature to most existing methodologies. These new methodologies will be based on ideas such as the Nyquist Array and block-diagonal dominance. A number of challenging and realistic case studies; mainly from the process industries; will be selected to quantify and demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed methodologies. Some of these case studies have been used for more than a decade as benchmark case studies for comparing existing methods and techniques. However, no satisfactory solution has been obtained for most of them and this failure of the currently available techniques and thinking motivated this research proposal.
