|
Describe the proposed research using (about 200) words geared to the non-specialist reader. Organic synthesis without solvents or reagents.Many processes in the organic chemical industry are wasteful of materials and energy because of the needless use of solvents. In addition, many processes require reagents which may be toxic, corrosive, expensive and require complex separation methods at the end of the reaction. By proposing to carry out the chemistry at low pressures in the gas-phase, this project aims to eliminate the need for solvents for certain key reactions and by utilising solid catalysts which can be recycled, the need for reagents in many processes will be eliminated. The choice of reactions and catalysts is critical for the sucess of the project and includes dehydration, dehydrogenation and cyclisation methods leading to alkenes, alkynes, carbonyl compounds, aromatics and heteroaromatics.
