Summary on Grant Application Form |
The challenge for the future development of photonic systems and optoelectronic devices is their increasing reliance on a wide-ranging combination of newmaterials, device designs, packaging and systems innovations. The ability to understand and integrate these technologies is of major strategic importancein maintaining the international competitiveness of UK photonics research. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is also a need for integration of different functional elements (optical, electronic, biological, etc) into combined units or sub-systems.In this project we intend to apply III-V and silicon substrate based technologies to develop compact ultra-short pulse, fast tunable and athermal opticalsources; low noise penalty active optical switches and routers; regeneration and signal processing techniques for bit rates up to 160 Gb/s; novel emitting, guiding and sensing structures and ultra-fast photo-detectors. These component technologies will be designed to meet the requirements of novel communications, display, microfluidics, imaging, filtering, THz generation and nanotechnology systems and will be evaluated experimentally for these applications.
