Summary on Grant Application Form |
We are proposing the purchase of a Thermo Haake CaBER 1 Extensional Rheometer. This low-cost instrument (ca 25k) became commercially available in the past few months and, for the first time, allows routine accurate measurement of the extensional viscosity of very mobile liquids. Extensional viscosity has been identified as the key fluid property for understanding a range of non-Newtonian flow phenomena, most notably drag reduction in duct flow and also large increases (up to a factor of 3) in reattachment length for sudden expansion flows.
