The present surge of activity into areas of new technologies, such as combinatorial chemistry and bioscience, has resulted in rapid growth of experiments involving several factors in areas such as drug discovery, the development of new and improved chemical processes and genetics. The results of many of these experiments are recorded as a success or failure (a binary response), for example a new compound is formed, or not. The data may be analysed using a class of statistical models called generalised linear models which are more flexible and complex than linear models and have been successfully applied in many practical situations. The development of methods for designing experiments based on these models, for more than one or two factors, has lagged behind that for the statistical analysis of the experimental data.The research will investigate methods of designing sequences of experiments for binary responses so that the maximum information is obtained for identifying the most appropriate statistical model, and achieving accurate model estimation and predictions. An important aspect of the work is the development of computationally intensive implementation methods. The work will build on, and complement, collaborative work with chemists on designing experiments which is already underway as part of the EPSRC E-Science initiative (GR/R67729; Combechem)
