Improved manufacture of high quality products from assembled components requires understanding of the key design and manufacturing parameters and how they are inter-related. Conventional methods for carrying designed experiments to extract this information are not feasible for mant products assembled from mechanical components. Research results from the existing EPSRC project GR/N16754 have created methodologies that allow for such experimentation to be performed in a sequential manner so that they can be readily embedded within a manufacturing process. This allows new knowledge to be acquired at low cost and to be swiftly incorporated into design and development programmes. This project will transfer these new ideas into a collaborating company so that they become part of their general design and development procedures. This transfer will be enabled by on-site training of both the company staff and the research assistant and the direct involvement of the research assistant in the working processes of the design team. Thus the project will allow the research assistant, who is experienced in the research concepts, to gain valuable training and experience in the practical exploitation of the ideas within the aerospace industry where the assistant will be exposed to the full range of activities in this product development and improvement area.
