Summary on Grant Application Form
Electromachining is concerned with unconventional methods of material removal, primarily used to overcome difficulties encountered with established techniques when materials such as hard alloys have to be machined and components with complex shapes and to high accuracies have to be produced. The 14th Symposium (ISEM) will deal with research papers on the main electromachining methods. The meeting is held every three years and draws strong support from most industrialised and developing countries. About 150 delegates presenting papers are expected. The 2004 ISEM is the first time in 20 years that the meeting has been held in the UK. The meeting is being sponsored by the International Institution for Production Research (CIRP), and the IEE and IMechE who are publicising the event. EPSRC support is requested to bring leading researchers and younger research workers from overseas who otherwise would be unlikely to attend ISEM. In the UK leading industrial companies have agreed to let attendees at ISEM visit their factories in order to see leading edge practice in the UK. These firms include Rolls-Royce, Mitsui-Babcock and the Wood Group, Aerospace Division.
