Summary on Grant Application Form |
All cells of higher plants are surrounded by polysaccharide-rich primary cell walls that are believed to play a crucial role in regulating plant structure, growth and resistance to disease. How are different components of the cell wall organised, how do they interact with each other, what is the implication of these interactions on a wide diversity of cell wall functions? Comprehensive answers to these questions require much research at the molecular level which is only possible with the aid of well characterised fragments of pectic polysaccharides. Such materials are not accessible in quantity from natural sources. This project will focus on chemical synthesis of large fragments of rhamnogalacturonan-II, a pectic mega-oligosaccharide that is present in primary cell walls of all higher plants. The methodology developed and employed in this project will serve as a platform for investigating the synthesis of further plant-derived oligosaccharides, an area that has been little explored by synthetic chemists to date.
