The aim of this project is to provide researchers, engineers and environmental officers with an improved method for investigating the propagation of noise outdoors. Investigations could then be performed in the urban environment without disturbance to residents. Propagation could also be determined in the presence of high background noise such as from motorways. In addition, propagation experiments could also be performed in uneven and hilly terrain where accurate measurements are currently difficult to obtain by traditional methods.This work is timely and significant given that noise research and policy are poised to take momentous steps forward both in the UK and in Europe. In particular, the 13million Noise Mapping project is in the first phase to produce environmental noise maps of England by 2004 and eventually of the UK. This research will provide a method for the measurement of environmental noise propagation that will be more accurate, more robust and faster than techniques currently available, which means that the benefits of the Noise Mapping project can be maximised.The project calls for a depth of knowledge of outdoor sound propagation, meteorology and digital signal processing techniques. The Acoustic Research Centre at the University of Salford is in the unique position to present the required combined expertise, experience and skills.
