|
Invariant theory is essentially the study of symmetries of polynomial functions. Traditionally, the coefficients of the polynomials were taken to be real or complex numbers. In modular invariant theory, the coefficients lie in a field of characteristic p, for a prime number p dividing the order of the symmetry group. Modular invariant theory has links and applications to algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, representation theory and group cohomology. Many of the techniques used in traditional invariant theory can not be used in modular invariant theory and as a result new methods must be developed. While much progress has been made, there remain a number of significant open questions. This proposed Overseas Travel Grant will fund visits by the principal investigator to Munich (Germany) and Kingston (Ontario, Canada). The purpose of these visits will be to maintain and develop collaborative relationships between the principal investigator and experts in modular invariant theory at Technische Universitat Munichen, the Royal Military College of Canada, and Queen's University.
