Summary on Grant Application Form
New real-time 3D echocardiography offers an opportunity as an accurate, non-expensive and portable cardiac imaging technique. However, there are issues In image quality, endocardial and pericardial border definition, and the field of view (completeness of the 3D data) that are barriers to clinical use in practice. These are also barriers to developing automated analysis methods and use of real-time 3D echocardiography for quantitative measurement in routine clinical use. In this proposal, we aim to address these issues, researching; optimal ways to acquire clinical data using a real-time 3D echocardiography system for complete acquisition and automated 3D quantification; methods for position-sensor free alignment of cardiac image volumes; and 3D segmentation, reconstruction and quantification of left ventricular global function parameters. Clinical studies will be conducted to assess the new methodology and the clinical utility of RT3D compared with cardiac MR imaging.
