Hydrogen is widely regarded as the most promising alternative to carbon-based fuels: it can be produced from a variety of renewable resources, and - when coupled with fuel cells - offers near-zero emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases. However, many technical challenges still remain, of which the most urgent is how to effectively store hydrogen. Therefore, the development of a viable solid-state storage material would lead to a step-change in the transition to aHydrogen Economy.Through Japanese research programmes such as WE-NET and the New Protium Function in Materials, a number of laboratories have emerged as international centres of excellence in this field of research. This research visit to four of these laboratories (one in Hiroshima University, one in AIST-Tsukuba, and two in Tohoku University), would examine a number of new processing and characterization techniques for solid-state storage materials, that are especially relevant to research programmes now commencing in the University of Birmingham, and to other UK universities (in the EPSRC SUPERGEN Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Consortium).
