Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to visit China to further research work in the UK on set theory, through dialogue and collaboration with researchers there. Our current research relevant to this project, is in axiomatic set theory, that seeks to provide a theoretical underpinning for all of mathematics, but is these days a mature branch of pure mathematics in its own right.A major theme of such current research, in which the applicant works, is to build models or worlds that satisfy the accepted axioms of set theory, and behave very much like one first constructed by Kurt Goedel which proved the consistency with the other axioms of set theory, of statements of mathematical interest such as the Axiom of Choice (equivalently that any set may be wellordered) or the Continuum Hypothesis (that any set of real numbers, if uncountable, is capable of being put in one-to-one correspondence with all the reals). The construction of such models, and the subsequent theorems about the combinatorial properties their ordinals enjoy has provided some deep insights into the structure of the universe of all sets of mathematical discourse.
