Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is directed at driving basic research in computational partial differential equations towards applications in the physical sciences involving multi-scales and multi-physics through a research network in computation and numerical analysis. The proposed network will address the need for better connectivity and communication between researchers in various areas of computational applied mathematics and the physical sciences. Amongst the mathematicians in the individual nodes of the network there is differing but complementary expertise in computational mathematics, stochastic analysis, numerical analysis, analysis of non-linear PDEs, free boundary and hyperbolic problems. This will form a basis for fruitful collaboration with groups working in the applied sciences. The proposed network builds on the research strengths of the individual groups and the past collaboration of the individual members. A vital component of the activities will be to support the collaborative training of young researchers coming from individual groups. The proposed network will also focus on the equally important issue of the development of skills that are necessary for the effective use of modern computational tools and facilities. The network will focus on three themes:- phase field and diffuse interface models - polymeric fluids - connecting microscopic and continuum models in computations.
