Summary on Grant Application Form |
Auxetic materials (e.g. those with a negative Poisson ratio) are very exciting new materials with a wide range of potential applications, from improving the strength and toughness of composites, better moulding and draping materials, sound absorbancy, implants etc. While auxetic foams, inorganic crystals and macroscopic structures are known, no auxetic polymers that deform on a molecular scale are known. Using promising leads developed from molecular modelling, I wish to model polymer structures using commercially available software in order to find potential auxetic materials. These would then form the basis of a full synthetic proposal, either to the EPSRC or industry or both.
