Summary on Grant Application Form |
This overseas travel application is to enable the applicant to visit the US in his role as chairman of 'Complex Mediums IV, a sub-conference of the SPIE annual meeting this year to be held in San Diego. It is anticipated that he will continue in his role as chairman for two subsequent years. In addition to the conference, the applicant intends to undertake a series of targetted visits to internationally leading research laboratories. This year, the focus of such visits is to be 'Negative Index Media'. Subsequent topics are to be driven by research trends but are likely to include plasmonic nanophotonics, magnetoactive metamaterials and chiral electromagnetics. The planned visits to the US will also afford the applicant the opportunity to continue his longstanding research collaboration with Pennsylvania State University, one of the leading research laboratories on Sculptured Thin Films. Such collabaration is now especially timely in view of the investigator's vision to create a centre for Sculptured Thin Film research in the UK.
