Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to obtain comprehensive data on the burn rate and emissions (especially NOx and hydrocarbons) from a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine operating in stratified charge mode. Maps will be obtained for the sytematic variation of the injection timing and ignition timing with different fuels of known composition at different overall air fuel ratios. Such comprehensive data do not appear to be in the public domain. The NOx emissions will be of particular interest, since Professor Raine has developed a model for predicting NOx emissions from stratified charge combustion in a model with multiple burned gas zones. It will be necessary to estimate the mixture distribution, and this will be derived from the overall air fuel ratio, and snatch sampling valve measurements of the mixture strength at the spark plug. These measurements will be made at different crank angles, for a range of injection timings with a lambda sensor calibrated for unburnt mixtures. The aim is to validate the stratified charge combustion model.
