Summary on Grant Application Form
Subdivision schemes offer an effective mechanism for the modelling of three-dimensional objects. They could replace the dominant NURBS-based representations in Computer Aided Design if certain problems can be solved. This proposal is one line of attack on those problems. It aims to produce subdivision schemes which preserve rotational features (such as cylinders) and which allow smooth blending between rotational features and nonrotational features. It will also develop the mathematical theory to allow these schemes to be analysed formally.
