Summary on Grant Application Form
SMA's are emerging from their reputation as 'interesting materials looking for applications', with wide use in the medical materials sector, and increasing application in both the general engineering and 'smart' technology sectors. The UK's SMA research community is small and for strategic reasons is in need of both growth and improved networking if it is to take advantage of the increasing use of these materials. The hosting of the European Symposium on Martensitic Transformation and Shape-Memory (ESOMAT) in the UK - the gathering of European expertise, offers the opportunity to both inform the existing UK base on recent developments in SMA's, as well as providing 'networking' opportunities for existing UK researchers and those new to the field. This proposal seeks funding to take advantage of the ESOMAT '03 presence in the UK by (i) providing funds to invite a small number of key international players who would otherwise not attend ESOMAT - to share their expertise with the UK community, and (ii) to expand the number of UK researchers by exposing invited new UK-based entrants to this international presence; researchers who would otherwise not attend ESOMAT.
