Summary on Grant Application Form |
Devices such as arrayed-waveguide gratings, fibre Bragg gratings and photonic crystals play a key role in optical transmission systems and networking. This role is typically related to their well-known wavelength-dependent characteristics. Distributed optical element (DOE) or holographic optical element (HOE) taxonomy is determined by their respective amplitude or phase-modulation of the incident light. In fact, DOE's and HOE's can also be regarded as grating-based devices. As such, they can produce complex spatial filtering functions such as fan-out and beam profiling, with light perpendicularly incident with respect to the plane of the element. Theoretical analysis has shown that light incident parallel to the device plane will show spectral rather than amplitude filtering effects. In IDAHO, we will investigate the spectral filtering capabilities of DOE's and HOE's, firstly to verify the theoretical predictions and then to fabricate a device with wavelength selectivity in the 1.55 pm region. The basic dispersive properties of the devices will also be investigated with the aim of including predetermined wavelength-dependent delay variation.
