The main proposition behind the proposed network is this: as the world of project management practice continues to develop across different industries and sectors, the subject of project management is now attracting major criticisms, and the gap between conventional project management theory and the developing practice is widening. One of the leading academics in the UK argues that the subject remains `stuck in a 1960s time warp', and others argue that the underlying theory of project management is obsolete: These might be harsh criticisms but the pattern now emerging in the UK and around the world is that of increasing concern about the relevance and value of conventional project management theory and how it relates to the growing practice of managing projects across different industry sectors, There are also increasing calls for the identification of new research perspectives and new research topics from other related disciplines, and its against this background that funding is sought for a new EPSRC network to help rethink this emerging discipline. In summary, the main argument is not that conventional project management theory should now be abandoned, but rather there is an urgent need to extend, enrich and develop this field beyond its current intellectual foundations.
