Summary on Grant Application Form
The application aims to secure equipment to support the rapidly growing research in the Aeronautics Department at Imperial College on turbulence modelling, turbulence simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics pertinent to fluid-flow problems in Aero/Mechanical, Biomedical and Marine Engineering. The bid is necessitated by the absence of medium-scale computing capability in the Department needed to support a wide range of fundamental and applied computational research projects, many undertaken with support by EPSRC, MoD, Qinetiq, BAE Systems, the EU, Westlands and other industrial and charitable sponsors. The equipment is also intended to facilitate and strengthen collaboration within DARPs, the BAE Systems-EPSC Integrated Programme of Research in Aeronautical Engineering and interactions, and with other groups engaged in turbulence research and CFD-related topics through a Turbulence Research Centre planned to be supported by an EPSRC Platform Grant. The principal beneficiaries are the agencies and industrial partners supporting the wide range of research projects of the applicants, which the proposed facility will assist. This includes: BAE Systems, Qinetiq, Westlands, the Marine sector, the Biomedical community and the wide range of industrial organisations with which the applicants collaborate within EU schemes. Other beneficiaries include the academic community, both in the UK and abroad, who collaborate with the applicants on the generation of knowledge in turbulence and computational fluid dynamics for a wide range of engineering flows, especially in aerospace, hydraulics and turbomachinery.
