The use of photonic technologies in novel ways to provide new system options has been identified by EPSRC as one of its long-term interests. This proposal brings together Queen Mary (QMUL), University College London (UCL) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to combine their expertise on antenna technology, electromagnetic modelling, wireless, microwave photonics technology and advanced packaging. The proposed collaborative research aims to produce a new type of optical/microwave transducer- the Photonic Antenna- by combining assymetric Fabry-Perot modulator/detectors (AFPM) with photonic band gap (PBG) antennas. Such antennas require no electrical power. The primary task at QMUL is to develop a fast and accurate algorithm that is used to design the proposed Photonic Antennas using AFPMs developed by UCL. In parallel, UCL is to research and fabricate high power microwave InGaAs/AlInGaAs Multiple Quantum Well AFPMs for integration with the PBG antennas. The PBG diplexing antenna concept pioneered by QMUL will be extended and used to suppress distortion products generated from nonlinearity within the AFPMs, and therefore improve the proposed Photonic Antenna system dynamic range. Photonic Antennas will then be combined as optically fed phased arrays for mobile broadband applications.
