Summary on Grant Application Form
One of the most important but least developed areas of Robust Engineering Design (RED) is its extension to micro-scale systems and components. St variations become relatively more important as the scale becomes smaller. Particular issues include: (i) interactions arising from close proximity of subsystems, (ii) presence of physical phenomena different to the macroscale, (iii) the increased importance of developing statistical versions of determination models for understanding variability, (iv) microscale technologies typically involve mufti-energy domains: e.g. electronic, magnetic, thermal, acoustic, mechanical. The development will employ high-level modelling of mufti-energy domain systems, initially bond graphs, in order to derive differential/algebraic/stochas models that incorporate concepts of robustness via specially constructed risk-based peformance indicators.
