This programme will develop new air-sensitive f-element chemistry. We will use functionalised N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands (already our lab) to make the first molecular lanthanide complexes with a double bond to another atom. This will be the first time that the electronic ratl steric properties of a ligand have been used to stabilise such a fragment. Because our functionalised NHC ligands are the only simple derivatives contain an adjacent anionic group, the syntheses will be straightforward. Because metal -NHC fragments are stable in extremely oxidising conditions some of these adducts, such as high-valent cerium oxo complexes may have relevance in catalytic oxidation chemistry such as occurs in cei mediated alkane oxidation. The same orbital interactions might allow us to make other unprecedented molecules, such as the first cis-uranyl [L This is a challenging project which could open up some new areas of unusual f-block chemistry, but requires some prior synthetic expertise for the researcher to handle the complexes and identify important leads in the programme, hence the request for a postdoctoral fellow in this explore of the programme. Some fall-back studies in the research are identified to maintain our profile in the field of f-element and carbene chemistry
