Summary on Grant Application Form |
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SW NTs) are normally obtained in bundles but recent work has demonstrated that it is possible to obtain resonance Raman spectra from individual isolated nanotubes. Important structural information can be obtained from the Raman spectrum of the isolated nanotubes and it is intended to extend this approach by undertaking a study of the controlled deformation of isolated SWNTs. The effect of deformation of the nanotubes will be followed from changes in their Raman spectra and the behaviour will be characterised in terms of their diameter and chirality. The intensities of the Raman radial breathing modes are strongly resonantly enhanced and this enhancement is expected to change as deformation of the nanotubes modifies their electronic structure. Isolated SWNTs will be prepared by CVD on silicon-based substrates and the position of the isolated nanotubes will be determined using different microscopical techniques. The nanotubes will be deformed by bending the substrate and the feasibility of undertaking simultaneous electrical conductivity measurements during deformation of the nanotubes will also be investigated. Suspensions of isolated SWNTs will also be prepared and their behaviour of under hydrostatic pressure will also be followed from changes in their Raman spectra.
