The portfolio partnership will address a range of topical research problems, of both a theoretical and applied nature, in systems and control. A particular strand of the work is the use of controlled power electronic devices to better utilise the electricity supply infrastructure to support energy trading and intermittent renewable energy resources. The projects undertaken will blend continuations of existing EPSRC grants with projects initiated in new, promising areas. Theoretical control systems research will concentrate on linear and nonlinear robust control, energy based methods (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems, dissipative and conservative systems) as well as optimal and model predictive control. A wide range of application areas will be addressed including: flexible AC transmission systems, micro-grids, DC power distribution systems (for ships and aircraft), MEMS-scale power generators (for medical applications) and the dynamic modelling and control of a variety of vehicles (including motorcycles and aircraft). The portfolio partnership will build on our unique position as an integrated group with expertise in both control and power engineering. It will permit retention of some highly experienced fixed term research staff working on existing EPSRC grants for longer periods if needed, will permit research in new and speculative areas and will broaden links with leadina researchers at home and abroad. by Drovidina fundina for visits and collaborative work.
