The proposal seeks funding to secure the longevity of two 300 MHz NMR spectrometers in Southampton Chemistry through the replacement of two obsolete ASPECT 3000 consoles with AVANCE micro-bays; the replacement of an antiquated dual probe and the link-up of a gifted auto-sampler. These spectrometers run the bulk of routine 'H and C analyses performed in the Department. Neither instrument is linked to a specific scientific programme. Rather, they underpin the research effort of many groups within the Department, most notably those involved in synthetic organic and synthetic inorganic research; supramolecular, bio-organic and combinatorial chemistry. Currently 134 registered users rely on the facility for compound characterisation and many of these users also depend on the facility for binding and kinetic studies or for acquiring gel-phase C spectra. Were either instrument to suffer irreparable breakdown, the effect on research in the Department would be calamitous. Upgrading the medium field NMR facility at Southampton Chemistry will ensure that our excellent track record in research and training is extended for years to come.
