Summary on Grant Application Form
Future Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) will exhibit novel planforms that are a considerable departure from existing aircraft designs. The stability and control characteristics of these vehicles are such that thrust vector control is widely regarded as a key enabling technology. However, many of the aerodynamic issues associated with thrust vectoring on UAV planforms, in particular unsteady aspects, have yet to be explored. An experimental investigation of the interaction of thrust-vector control with vortex-dominated wing flows is therefore proposed. Both wind tunnel and water tunnel experiments will be performed to investigate the interaction of static and dynamically deflected jets with vortices over stationary and manoeuvring wings. Detailed flow field investigations with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) will be complemented by force measurements with a view to providing a clearer understanding of this complex interaction.
