Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research is evaluating the environmental risk of sewage sludge recycling to agricultural land using an integrated field/ modelling approach built on cross-disciplinary science base. The project contributes to knowledge on contaminant attenuation in the agricultural environment and develops practical measures to minimise non-point source pollution from sludge recycling to land by devising Best Environmental Practice Options through development a decision support framework - the NERM (Nutrient Export Risk Matrix). This proposal is an extension to GR/N26074 which was impacted by the Foot Mouth epidemic at the original field site, resulting in a serious delay to the field and modelling programme. The original objectives of the research programme remain the same; an extension is required in order to meet fully these objectives. This is necessary because the delays to the field programme meant that the first field season was missed, which had knock-on effects in terms of the availability of data with which to calibrate the field and catchment-scale models. A prototype of the NERM has been developed in collaboration with the project end-users but requires further field data a modelling input to validate the parameters it contains.
