Summary on Grant Application Form
RF (radio frequency), microwave and acoustics research has focused on three topic areas: materials and their applications, new metrology, and adaptive techniques. Success in these areas has relied heavily on the solution of large scattering problems, using mainly analytic techniques, FD-TD (finite difference-time domain), evolutionary optimization, and asymptotic techniques. Research is broad based and multidisciplinary, with the following unifying themes - (i) analysis of materials with non-linear and /or tensor intrinsic properties, (ii) analysis of materials and structures with embedded active components, (iii) coupled analyses (e.g. EM and structural analysis), (iv) analysis of high contrast composite structures, (v) analysis of structures at millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths (i.e. large structures), (vi) optimization of large numerical problems, (vii) analysis of the effective properties of heterogenous materials. The Sun workstation will facilitate research into the above areas. The increased computing capacity of the Sun will also allow the Group to develop its existing engineering expertise from proof-of-principle to practical application.
