The project aims to investigate the nonlinear interaction between a flared structure and transient steep waves, which has some vital design implications. Previous numerical simulation for such a problem has mainly focused on wall-sided structures and the method used has been based on either entirely FEM or BEM. The FEM is computationally more efficient than the BEM but it is also more complex in the mesh generation. In this project the coupled BEM and FEM will be adopted, which was developed by the authors and tested successfully for the 2D problem. The combination is based on the consideration of the relative strength and weakness of FEM and BEM. The former is used away from the body where the domain is large but regular, while the latter is used near the body where the domain is confined but complicated. This allows the complexity of a structure to be taken care of by the BEM, while the large scale computation is taken care by the FEM. The combination is particularly suitable for the flared structures which will be considered in the project. Model tests will also be carried out to verify the numerical simulations.
