This proposal focuses on resolving the issues surrounding the origin of ferromagnetism in the divalent hexaborides. Since its recent discovery, controversy has reigned over the nature and origin of the magnetic moments. In particular, it is still not clear whether the magnetism is indeed an intrinsic property of the bulk, or whether it is parasitic with its origin in native vacancy type defects or near-surface magnetic impurities.We propose to tackle this issue through a combination of magnetic characterisation measurements allied to positron annihilation, inelastic x-ray scattering and polarised neutron experiments designed to reveal the electronic and defect structure of these materials. Theoretical support for these experiments will be provided from within the team and through external collaborations.
