Summary on Grant Application Form
The subject of this proposal is the development of a superior technique for the production of highly efficient Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) waveguide devices based on groundbreaking results using Zinc-indiffusion. From initial experiments performed at the ORC over the last few weeks, we have discovered that Zinc-indiffusion presents a potential route towards overcoming all of the drawbacks inherent to the current leading waveguide fabrication techniques in PPLN (ie: Proton Exchange and Titanium Diffusion). Early proof-of-principle results demonstrate that Zinc-indiffusion is readily compatible with the periodic poling process, while providing 100 times better photorefractive damage resistance than the native material - a property which provides an important route towards room temperature operation and efficient blue/visible generation, both of which are unattainable via Titanium Diffusion or Proton Exchange. Based on these fundamental advantages over existing technology, the primary goal of this project will be the development of optimised Zinc-indiffusod PPLN channel waveguides for high efficiency operation in low power applications, leading towards specialised sources such as cw blue light generation for biomedical fluorescence microscopy and low-cost devices for telecommunications wavelength conversion.
