Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project concerns the development of an instrument for the non-destructive testing of steel reinfocing members embedded in structures otherwise made from non-ferrous material and its use to study corrosion processes in situ. The particular subject of the research will be reinforced concrete. The instrument will consist of two complementary magnetic probes, one inductive and the other a microwave resonance probe, together with a magnetizing system to cause the structure under test to assume a defined magnetic state. Once the system has been developed it will be used in experiments to study directly the corrosion processes that occur in reinforced concrete. Only indirect means are currently commercially available for such studies. The work will be carried out in collaboration with 6 nonacademic parties with an interest in concrete repair and associated instrumentation. The development will be along lines that will be exploitable commercially for in-situ non-destructive evaluation of large structures, including, but not exclusively limited to concrete. Hence, demonstrator units will be produced as part of the programme. The design of the magnetizing system and probes will be based on findings from initial investigations into the magnetic properties of the steel used in reinforced concrete and will be carried out in close collaboration with the industrial parties. Access will be provided for on-site testing of the technique before a demonstrator instrument is developed.
