This platform grant is to support a multidisciplinary effort using a raft of novel techniques that have been pioneered, developed and patented by our group at the University of Southampton. These advances have led to 1.3M Southampton SRIF, Royal Society/Wolfson and Merck investment in a major new Nanomaterials Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF) combining flexible self-assembly with rapid device fabrication. To exploit the opportunities made possible by our world-leading expertise in the growth and exploitation of mesoporous and templated nanomaterials in functional devices, we focus on four new strands of research: optical nanocavities, templated nanomagnets, nano- and molecular electronics, and novel architectures for selfassembly.With our interdisciplinary team of academics and PDRAs in partnership with our existing strong grant portfolio, we bring a significant effort to bear on developing strategies that will be crucial for future integrated devices. A key benefit of grouping a wide range of projects under the same grant is the capability to spread the risk of some of our more adventurous ideas. Our proposal knits together the different strands of our activities in this area, providing a significant critical mass of researchers with the continuity to progress effectively on many fronts.
