Summary on Grant Application Form |
Physical phenomena are generally described by differential equations. These are usually very difficult or impossible to solve. Nevertheless there is a special class of differential equations which are solvable in some sense. They are called integrable. When we manage to describe a physical phenomenon by an integrable differential equation we can understand and often predict its behaviour. Topological Quantum Field Theory is derived from a physical theory that incorporates general relativity and quantum physics. It can be tested on pure mathematical objects and we plan to prove a conjecture originating with the physicist Witten. The structure of the project involves the joint effort of three mathematicians, Dr M. Mazzocco (Cambridge University) as Principal Investigator, Prof. Y. Shang (Tsinghua University, China) as a Visiting Fellow and Dr G. Carlet (SISSA, Trieste, Italy) as a Research Assistant. The total amount needed is 111,568.
