This RAIS project follows on from the LINK S3IA project 'Instruments for Monitoring Properties of Running Threadlines using Novel Techniques' (IMPoRTNT). Through the main project a prototype portable non-contact tension measuring instrument based on optical sensing has been developed. The instrument senses light reflected from a vibrating yarn, and can be applied whether the yarn is moving or not. The development successfully overcomes the weaknesses of contact type tension measurement normally used in the textile industry. Non-contact measuring of tension is based on the well known principle of vibrating strings. The sensing method developed is able to provide a signal that varies according to its transverse vibrations, without any sensitivity to yarn count, unevenness, hairiness, reflectivity or ambient lighting. The analysis of this signal as to its frequency content leads to the determination of yarn tension.Comparison of the instrument with its contact type counterparts has indicated new tension measuring possibilities in the textile industry including uses in process automation. The RAIS project aims, in collaboration with SDL International Ltd., to develop a compact non-contact tension measuring device by the application of DSP technology, which can be used for handheld or machine mounted yarn tension measurement.
