Summary on Grant Application Form |
The development of new methods for the synthesis of compounds in chiral (either right- or left-handed) form is of vital importance for the synthesis of fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals. The aim of this research project is to explore the possibility of making compounds known as cyclopropanes in this way.The technique which we hope to use is the attachment of a chiral unit known as a suffoximine to a reactive diazo portion. We anticipate that the chiralit of the sulfoximine will be transferred to the final cyclopropane product. Once it has done its job, the sulfoximine can be removed, leaving us with a chiral cyclopropane. We also hope to perform further reactions on the cyclopropane products to illustrate the utility of the new method. The research will be carried out in the Chemistry department at University College London. All of the work will be undertaken by a PhD student, who w receive a thorough training in the skills required for future employment in the British pharmaceutical industry.
