Summary on Grant Application Form
A computational Grid offers technically the possibility to access and process vast amounts of data at many different sites. However, to support information sources in advertising what they have to offer and information consumers in locating and integrating data, a semantic Grid will have to built as an additional infrastructure on top of it. Due to the sheer number of information sources and the distributed nature of the Grid, various kinc incompleteness and partiality of the available information become a serious issue in the semantic Grid. While techniques for storing and querying incomplete information have been developed from an early stage in database research, information integration has become an issue more recently. At the core of this project is the observation that formal approaches to the two problems of incom information and information integration are sufficiently similar to combine them into a single formal model. The project goal is to combine these two lines of research and to develop a coherent formal model for representing and querying incomplete heterogeneous information sources in an integrated fashion, both at the data and the metadata level. Based on the model we will develop algorith for locating and querying such sources. We will implement and validate the algorithms within DataGrid's R-GMA information system.
