Summary on Grant Application Form |
The study of the relationship between L-functions of algebraic varieties and automorphic forms has become one of the pivotal areas of research across the whole spectrum of algebraic number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry. The last Durham symposium on L-functions in arithmetic took place in 1996, and since then there have been numerous spectacular developments in this area.We propose to concentrate on four principal themes, namely: automorphic forms and associated Galois representations, local p-adic Galoi: representations, special values of L-functions, and the local Langlands conjecture for GL(n). These themes have been chosen to reflect areas it which there has been highly significant recent progress and where we can expect further results in the period leading up to the symposium. Some of these themes fit in excellently with important UK research work, while it is hoped that others will spur interest and activity in crucially importan topics in which at present there is less expertise in the UK.
