Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of this ambitious research programme is to develop an optimised nematic liquid crystal display technology for use in dual mode mobile IT displays, developing both the materials involved and the device technology to exploit them. The programme is split into three work packages, two are aimed at the development of the liquid crystal device technology, and the third at the synthesis and development of optimised materials and mixtures. The programme will include the construction of very simple demonstrator displays. The programme will link closely with, and benefit from, the existing areas of research in each of the institutions involved. The programme falls well within the four objectives of the Faraday COMIT Partnership, summarised as:1. To synthesise new multifunctional organic materials for microdisplays and telecommunication devices 2. To carry out detailed studies on the behaviour of multifunctional materials both in the bulk and at surfaces to understand their performance in displays. 3. To design and construct new devices 4. To train and educate young researchers for academic and, particularly, industrial careers.
