Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of the proposed work is to investigate novel integrated waveguide structures for low loss millimetre-wave components. The guides will be based around periodic dielectric structures (photonic crystals) formed by cylindrical columns of air in solid, low loss dielectric materials, with a defect waveguide channel formed by the absence of air columns. Confinement in the direction parallel to the columns is achieved by conducting plates on the top and bottom surfaces of the slab which eliminates radiation in the out of plane direction. The simplicity of the guides means that they can be fabricated from conventional microwave substrate materials. Techniques to integrate the new waveguides with planar circuitry and microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) will be investigated. This will provide a route for highly-integrated systems based on low loss waveguide components integrated with active MMICs for applications in future broadband wireless LAN and vehicular radar systems.
