Summary on Grant Application Form |
The workshop will discuss mathematical methods for the analysis of conformal invariant scaling structures for spatial statistical systems. Until recently all results in this area were obtained by theoretical physicists who were able to conjecture many properties - such as the existence of critical exponents and scaling laws - which, although well-confirmed by numerical simulation, seemed far beyond the reach of rigorous theory. In the last few years, this situation has completely changed. Many of the physicists' conjectures have been proved, and indeed new results have been found which it seems cannot be derived using their methods. It is important that this has come about not by making rigorous the methods of conformal field thoery, but by completely different ideas originating in the theory of Brownian motion. The invited speakers will not only present the main ideas and methods which led to the remarkable recent progress, but will also discuss open problems and opportunities for future development
