Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding is sought for holding at I.C.M.S., Edinburgh a focused, one-week workshop on recent mathematical developments, current theoretical approaches, practical advances and outstanding issues in nonlinear optics, especially those concerning guided waves in inhomogeneous media. The aim is to foster interaction between leading practitioners in the theory, computation and experimentation in advanced opto-electronic waveguiding structures with mathematicians developing variational, and other functional analytic tools. The term'soliton' now embraces many localized coherent structures (vector solitons, gap solitons, accelerating pulses, dispersion-managed pulses,..) with structure much more complex than the NLS soliton. Understanding the dynamics and stability for such non-integrable systems is attracting considerable attention in both the opto-electronics and mathematical communities. The workshop is intended to assemble 25-30 of the world's leading theoretical and mathematical experts, together with some younger researchers in the field, both to excahnge knowledge of recent developments and to discuss and develop current and future issues.
