Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will seek to develop new configurations of multifunctional active integrated antennas(AIA) for future low-cost low-power communications systems, where multifunctional antennas will be integrated with dynamically-biased high-efficiency power amplifiers (PA) in Class E or F mode, respectively. Different antennas capable of realzing these multiple functions (such as broadband circular/linear polarization and high gain) will be studied. Systematic methods of designing Class E/F PAs will be developed. Dynamic-bias technique will be employed to further improve the efficiency of Class E/F amplifiers under output power variation. Their efficiency and linearity characteristics for different transmitter modulation schemes will be studied. By using dual-polarized radiator, we can produce high-efficiency AIAs with simultaneous transmit-receive functions. Global modeling and characterization of AIAs will be done by using the FDTD method. Arrays of the active antennas will be developed. Our goal is to develop new compact multifunctional AIAs for RF front ends which could reduce the power consumptions, and achieve high performances in both the circuit function (such as high efficiency under output power variation) and the antenna function (such as broadband circular/linear polarization, high gain, or duplex). To realize this, we wish to combine the recent developments in AIAs, compact broadband radiators, CP/LP radiators, high-efficiency PA technologies and numerical methods.
