Summary on Grant Application Form |
The requested funding would support the continuation of standardisation and dissemination activities associated with a specific strand of EPSRC-funded and related research being carried out by applicant's research group. It will serve partly to maintain the influential presence of Lancaster University in standardisation activities, most notably with respect to the MPEG-7 standard for multimedia interchange. In particular, EPSRC support would enable the continuation by Lancaster researchers of standardisation activities that have been carried out through previous EPSRC support, most notably an EPSRC travel grant for `Travel in connection with standardisation and dissemination activities (GR/M81755) which was completed on 30 June 2002, the EPSRC-funded AVA project (GR/L81604) and the EPRSC-DTI-ESRC-funded RETRIEVE project (GR/N09718). Members of the applicants' research team (most notably Ed Hartley and Adam Lindsay) have chaired and co-chaired the MPEG-7 Requirements, Systems, Evaluation and Conformance, and Audio Ad Hoc Groups. They have served as co-editors on both the MPEG-7 Audio (ISO/IEC 15938-4) and MPEG-7 Systems (ISO/IEC 15938-1) standards issued in 2002. Mr. Lindsay is currently an MPEG-7 Systems co-chair. The applicant's research group is thus uniquely placed among UK universities to ensure that MPEG-7 and other emeraina standards are influenced by developments in research. and vice versa.
