Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is based on integrating the relevant experience in materials techniques (Aston University), biochemical, biological and physico-chemical properties (Oxford & Keele Universities) of the intervertebral disc with clinical experience to produce an effective clinical therapy in the form of biomimetic hydrogel nucleus prosthesis. The close existing interaction between scientists and clinicians in Oswestry and Oxford will facilitate the transition from exciting interdisciplinary science, by exploiting the materials expertise available within Aston Biomaterials Research Unit, to the development of a product to fill a clear clinical need, acceptable to spinal surgeons and patients. The aim of the project is to produce a biomimetic hydrogel nucleus prosthesis that is capable of treating severe disc degeneration along with other spinal disorders associated with ageing by the use of a minimally invasive therapy. The project requires a number of interlinked stages to achieve its objectives as outlined above.
