Summary on Grant Application Form
It is planned to exploit advances in modem differential geometry in the construction of new Cosserat-type modelling strategies at analytical, asymptotic and numerical levels. This will enable accurate and yet inexpensive generation of parameters for component models and to verify these models with reduced reliance on detailed FE analysis. The Project will develop novel mathematical methods and computational algorithms for the effective modelling and characterisation of MEMS. This will include development of fully integrated mathematical models for structures in MEMS and a methodology for their construction taking into account critical physical and engineering factors. The Project will improve the computational diagnostic techniques by implementing benefits in efficiency and simplicity based on modem mathematical methods. The overall aim of this programme is to prove an efficient, practical method of modelling complex micro-mechanical devices to support right-first-time design and generate a suite of prototype modelling tools that is versatile enough to permit, in addition to dynamic simulation, reliable fault diagnostics and reliability verification.
