Summary on Grant Application Form |
A project research studentship is requested to design and construct a tilting stage on a birefringence imaging microscope with the aim of being able to measure magnitude and orientation of birefringence in three dimensions. The birefringence imaging microscope is capable of analysing CCD images and creating new images illustrating either orientation or magnitude information. By collecting images for various tilts of the specimen and deriving these quantities in each case, we shall be able to reconstruct full information about the orientation of the optical indicatrix in a specimens as well as the values of the three possible birefringences that characterise the sample. Once this has been demonstrated, we shall use this technique together with a database of birefringence information for known crystals, to develop a means of automatically identifying crystalline materials.
